What We Look For in Writing
There are no strict rules on style, as long as the writing is compelling and authentic. For us, it's all about telling a meaningful story—through vivid moments, honest reflection, and the texture of lived experience. Above all, we want stories that resonate.
We're looking for storytellers who have something real to say about Pakistan. Whether you're capturing a moment in time, documenting cultural traditions, profiling your community, or reflecting on what it means to live here—your voice and perspective are what matter.
We value:
Authentic voices and personal perspective
Depth, nuance, and complexity
Quality storytelling that resonates emotionally
Stories that challenge assumptions
Work that creates genuine connection
Length and Focus
As a guide, we prefer stories around 1,500-2,000 words, but we're open to longer and shorter pieces if the story warrants it.
Focus on what matters most—a specific moment, person, place, or experience rather than trying to cover everything. We know that life in Pakistan contains multitudes, and your entire experience with a place, tradition, or community can't be condensed into 2,000 words. Don't try to tell everything. Instead, find the one aspect that captures something essential, and tell that story deeply.
A Note on Generative AI
We require that all stories are written entirely by human writers, and all images must be the result of a photographic process using a camera (tasteful editing in Lightroom, Photoshop, or similar tools is welcome and encouraged).
We do not accept submissions that use generative AI tools in any capacity. This includes platforms like ChatGPT, as well as AI writing assistants built into operating systems and word processors (Copilot, Google Docs' "Help me write", Apple Writing Tools, etc.).
If you're not a confident writer, or if English is not your first language, that's completely fine. What matters is that you have a story to tell. We'll work with you through the editing process to help shape your story into something you're proud of. Authentic voice always matters more than perfect grammar.
